Our expertise lies in precisely identifying the seven types of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
Diagnosing Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), now clinically referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), involves a thorough evaluation encompassing clinical interviews, behavioral observations, ADHD-specific rating scales, and collateral information from various settings. A medical examination is crucial to rule out other potential contributors, ensuring that symptoms are not solely attributable to medical conditions. The diagnostic process considers the duration, severity, and impact of symptoms on daily functioning, requiring evidence of impairment in social, academic, or occupational domains. Professionals also evaluate developmental factors and rule out alternative psychiatric or medical explanations. Regular follow-up assessments are essential to monitor symptoms and gauge the effectiveness of any interventions implemented. The diagnosis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s cognitive and behavioral functioning, enabling tailored and effective treatment strategies.

Upon identifying the specific type of ADD, we tailor our treatment approach to meet the individual needs of patients.
The treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), formerly known as ADD, typically involves a comprehensive, individualized approach. Behavioral interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and parent training, help individuals develop coping strategies. Psychoeducation enhances understanding of ADHD, empowering individuals and families. Collaboration with schools ensures tailored support through IEPs or 504 plans. Medications, such as stimulants or non-stimulants, address symptom severity. Support groups offer emotional assistance, and lifestyle modifications, including exercise and a balanced diet, contribute to overall well-being. Technology tools can aid organization and focus. A collaborative, multi-modal strategy, adapting to individual needs, is key for effective ADHD management. Regular monitoring and adjustments optimize treatment success.

Our skilled team provides medical care, counseling, and nutritional support for ADD patients.
Medical support for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is multifaceted. It encompasses behavioral interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and parental training, providing practical strategies for symptom management. Collaboration with schools ensures tailored support through Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans. Medications, including stimulants and non-stimulants, may be prescribed based on individual needs and symptom severity. Therapy and counseling address emotional challenges, while support groups offer a platform for shared experiences. Educational support, like tutoring, aids academic challenges. Regular monitoring and adjustments to the treatment plan are essential for optimal outcomes, emphasizing a collaborative approach involving healthcare professionals, educators, and families.

Types of Attention Deficit Disorder
Concentration and learning represent fundamental capacities shared by all animals, crucial for individual and collective survival. Given the intricate interplay of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions in human life, the processes of focus and memory engage the entire brain. Each segment of the brain plays a vital role, contributing to the overall cognitive function. Imbalances in one region can disrupt attention and memory in interconnected areas.
The mission of ADD Clinics is to enhance every facet of brain function and metabolism. By achieving comprehensive improvements, encompassing learning, memory, organization, and task execution, our aim is to evoke a sense of admiration in patients for the excellence of healthy brains. The aspiration is for individuals to actively strive for the attainment of an optimal, well-functioning brain.
Distracted, inattentive, disorganized, hyperactive, restless, and impulsive.
Prone to distraction with a short attention span, yet lacking hyperactivity. Instead, frequently displays a sluggish or apathetic demeanor.
Excessive anxiety, a propensity for arguments, and compulsive tendencies; frequently becomes ensnared in a cycle of negative thoughts.
Easily provoked anger and rage, occasional bouts of panic and fear, and a mild tendency towards paranoia.
Fluctuating moods and diminished energy. Socially withdrawn, experiencing persistent mild depression, and frequent bouts of hopelessness.
Prone to anger and aggression, heightened sensitivity to noise, light, clothing, and touch; frequently inflexible, exhibiting episodes of unkind, unpredictable behavior and grandiose thinking.
Anxious, tense, and prone to anticipating the worst, particularly in timed test situations; experiences social anxiety and frequently exhibits physical stress symptoms like headaches and gastrointestinal issues. Tends to avoid conflicts.
Each subtype of ADD presents distinct diagnostic and treatment characteristics. Employing a comprehensive range of diagnostic skills and medical tests is essential to ensure the most accurate diagnosis and precise treatment for each case.

Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder
Diminished circulation, deficiencies in sex hormones (Estrogen/Testosterone/DHEA), and malabsorption of essential vitamins (B12, vitamin D, folate, zinc) are all linked to the natural aging process. These issues represent easily treatable causes of attention, memory, and mood disorders.
Conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 Diabetes, sleep apnea, infections (Lyme, Syphilis, HIV, etc.), as well as thyroid and endocrine disorders, among many others, can significantly compromise brain function.
Numerous individuals with attention deficit in the context of ADD often contend with multiple factors mentioned earlier, necessitating an expert approach to address each adverse impact on the brain. Physicians adept at resolving intricate medical challenges are crucial for optimizing attention, memory, and focus. ADHD diagnosed in childhood frequently persists into adulthood.
Several conditions that contribute to attention and focus difficulties can also impact motor skills, pain perception, and cognition. Our objective is to cultivate a fully productive brain. Even brains that already perform at a high level can experience enhancement.
Traumatic brain injury (such as concussions), substance abuse medications, sleep deprivation, stress, chronic pain, and inadequate nutrition/malabsorption represent just a few of the numerous acquired factors contributing to ADD.
ADD has a strong genetic component, with the majority of patients having a parent or sibling who is also affected.
ADD Treatment
The four treatment domains encompass biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. The specific treatment approach will be tailored to the ADD diagnosis (including its seven sub-types) and co-morbidities, addressing other concurrent illnesses or conditions.
Research on dietary habits validates impaired cognitive function among individuals who are overweight or obese. The consumption of foods high in saturated fat, when combined with starches, triggers the release of toxic cytokine hormones by abdominal fat cells, the gut, liver, and brain, adversely affecting neuron (brain cell) function. Our diet counselors will analyze potential dietary modifications, additions, or supplements that may improve attention and memory functions in the brain.
Nutritional supplements, whether derived from food, vitamins, minerals, or herbs, contribute to enhancing brain function. The ADD Clinics store provides a range of products, including PrescriptFit items and various nutritional supplements.
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy will be coordinated for eligible candidates within their local community. For those with previous brain concussion injuries, “The Oxygen Revolution” by Paul Harch, MD, is strongly recommended reading.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), crucial for optimal brain cell function, is prescribed as needed. Dr. Owen’s book, “The Best Sex of Your Life: Diet and Medical Therapy,” which delves into HRT strategies within the framework of complex medical conditions, including ADD, is accessible through our store and website www.drdiet.com.
Sleep prescriptions, including CPAP, will be recommended as needed. BrainTap technology, utilizing brainwave training, could be advantageous. Employing frequency following response, BrainTap incorporates beats, tones, and light pulses with guided imagery and messages to enhance sleep. Additional resources such as neurofeedback and various meditation techniques can be explored at www.amenclinics.com.
Medication is prescribed only after addressing all mitigating conditions. Various medications such as stimulants, anti-depressants, anti-epileptics, anti-psychotics, beta blockers, and others may be recommended based on individual needs.
Medical conditions may be managed at ADD Clinics or referred to the relevant specialist. These conditions encompass Type 2 Diabetes, circulatory issues, infections, arthritis, gastrointestinal diseases, thyroid and adrenal concerns, dementia, and epileptic illnesses.
Physical activity enhances cognitive function, memory, and mood. An exercise professional will assess your fitness abilities and limitations, providing tailored exercise programs for optimal benefits.

ADD Diagnosis
ADD can be categorized into seven subtypes based on symptoms and SPECT brain imaging. An accurate diagnosis relies on information gathered from various sources:
The Amen Symptom Score Sheet (Master Questionnaire) comprises specific questions that aid in subtyping ADD. All patients are required to complete and submit this questionnaire before the entry examination.
Irlen Syndrome Testing is conducted during the initial examination. Irlen syndrome is a prevalent visual processing disorder that can be addressed through the use of filtered lenses. Many ADD patients experience Irlen syndrome, and it can be easily and safely treated without the use of drugs.
Laboratory Blood Testing will be conducted based on the probable diagnosis. Medically treatable conditions affecting brain function, such as diabetes, thyroid issues, anemia, adrenal problems, sex-hormone deficiency, infections, inflammation, circulatory/cardiac concerns, liver and kidney function, or cancer, will be examined. Correctable conditions will be addressed and treated accordingly.
Sleep Apnea Testing will be conducted for individuals with a probable diagnosis of sleep apnea (if not previously diagnosed or treated). A straightforward, at-home testing device will aid in diagnosing and treating this prevalent disorder that significantly impacts attention and memory. CPAP treatment will be prescribed as needed, along with nutrition therapy and weight loss recommendations.
Cerescan SPECT Brain Imaging is typically recommended for most patients, with scans conducted at DIS Imaging in Metairie, Louisiana. Cerescan integrates information from clinical scores to provide the most accurate diagnosis. It is valuable in assisting with multiple diagnoses, including ADD, Traumatic Brain Injury, Anxiety, Depression, or Bipolar disorders.
Urine Drug Screening will be conducted for all new patients and periodically during follow-up visits, especially for those on controlled medications such as stimulants. Combining medications or drugs is hazardous and may lead to exclusion from further stimulant prescriptions. The use of alcohol, tobacco, benzodiazepines/sleep medications, opiates, and marijuana can impair brain function and should be avoided. The physician will oversee the management of prescription drugs that may impact brain function.
All new patients will undergo a Nutrition Consultation to address brain-toxic food combinations or obesity. Cognitive decline often stems from obesity and poor nutrition, both of which can significantly improve with nutrition therapy. This forms a foundational element of treatment at ADD Clinics. Every patient will be advised to undergo 12 weeks of lifestyle and supplement therapy before considering lifelong prescribed medications, potentially rendering medication unnecessary.
All patients entering ADD Clinics for treatment will undergo an evaluation for addictive medications. A Certified Addiction Counselor will conduct interviews and provide treatment options for eliminating substances of abuse such as tobacco, benzodiazepines, opiates, marijuana, and daily alcohol. Optimal ADD treatment cannot be administered while on these medications. Patients with a history of methamphetamine addiction will not be treated with stimulants.
